Happy and Glorious – 2019 edition

Yet again it has been a year (near enough) since my last Happy and Glorious post! With being back in full-time work, extra study for my postgraduate qualification, the business of moving house and ‘setting up home, there hasn’t been a lot of time or energy left over for WordPressing. I’ve still been completing my ‘line a day’ journal which is a lovely, low daily commitment to journaling with a 5-year overview (once completed), as well as occasional updates to my personal handwritten journal; but writings of the internet variety have been limited to Facebook and a newfound love for Instagram.

Here is my list for the year – in the order I pull them out of my ‘Happy and Glorious’ tin!

Here’s the disclaimer – these lists are really for my reference and reflection but by posting them online it gives me a sense of accountability to keep filling the tin through the year. Read if you wish, ignore if you’d rather. These also only focus on the good bits, there have been not so good bits in between but that is not what this post is for, it’s for tallying up all the good stuff that has happened in the year. I may well have missed some good bits if I didn’t write them down quick enough after they happened!!!!

  • Cormac Maharu O’Beirne entered the world to upgrade some of my loveliest friends to one of my favourite families in the world (other than my own, of course!) : January
  • Seeing Captain Marvel at the Showcase Cinema Deluxe in Southampton (I may have a slight obsession with how comfortable the seats here are) : March
  • Met Cormac after ensuring I was completely germ free ❤️ : February
  • Shazam! Took me a while to get around to seeing Zachary Levi in his first starring big screen role: April
  • Surprise party for Diluki and a lovely weekend celebrating at Bath Festival and getting lots of cuddle time with Cormac : June
  • Reading about Binge Eating Disorder and through that understanding HOW my relationship with food is dysfunctional – this has helped me to manage my eating habits and loose weight : January/February
  • Got the keys to my little [rented] house in Devon : April
  • Moved in (properly) to my little house in Devon : April (a couple of weeks after I got the keys)
  • 6-months in the job.. they’re still happy with me and I’m still happy with them 😁 : June (also noted the same at my second 1:1 in February, I’m sensing a theme)
  • Dublin trip for Cormac’s naming ceremony and having some quality time with Diluki & Alan – a real treat… and proper Guinness too! It involved flying from Exeter airport and a flight path that went over my house : 28 June-1 July
  • Avengers: Endgame. Long awaited emotional couple of hours but overall a good end to the Avengers films : May
  • “I ❤️ my job. So glad I took the plunge and changed career” : Jan/Feb
  • Mum’s 70th Birthday Party. Helping to throw a lovely party, catch up with old family friends I haven’t seen for years (Jo Tanter, Wendy Miller & John & Joy) as well as raising enough money (mum requested donations in stead of presents) to buy a cow through Send a Cow! : June
  • “Having the best boss & employer” : November (supporting me through a tough time being off work with severe acute pain)
  • Baby Salt-Crockford arriving to turn more friends into a family ❤️ : December
  • Stevie Wonder (Plus Special Guest Lionel Richie) in Hyde Park – continuing Mum’s birthday celebrations : July
  • Getting my lovely kitten, Min ❤️ : July
  • The lovely Lucy, who I remember pushing in a pram back in the day, and Dom becoming a family with the arrival of Florence ❤️ : November
  • Romsey Show – being asked back to do the commentary for the sheep grand parade and generally having a lovely day catching up with friends from Mum & Dad’s ringside parking spot : September
  • Catching up with Ruth for coffee – been a scarily long time since we did that either in the parent’s kitchen or hers! : December
  • Catching up with Rosie C (yes, I have to clarify which Rosie!) : December (and possibly Easter-ish? I’m getting old, I didn’t write it down so I’m not sure when it happened!)
  • Catching up with Rosie M (see I told you!) away from all the madness of uni : September
  • Graduation! Made the transition from Graduand to Graduate on one of the hottest days of the year, in the full gear! : July
  • Getting out for a ride on Taoiseach and feeling great after not riding for a loooong time (I did take a precautionary hot bath and am on some hefty anti-inflammatories for the trapped nerve in my neck so it might not have been a true representation of my lack of stiffness post ride!!) : December

Forgive me bloggers for I have sinned; it has been 11-weeks since my last confession….

Fast is the new…. Fast!

Forgive me friends it has been 66 days since my last blog.

Going back to my last blog, on 7th Jan, I was 7-days into the Fast Diet (or 5:2 Diet) and was feeling superb.  Fast forward to today and I am only just finding time to sit down and update you all on my progress. Continue reading

Work has been busy which has meant that there is more money coming in but there has been less time for doing things on the computer that are no-work related as I get to the end of the working day and need to switch off both literally and figuratively. Continue reading

The way the world works

I have fallen down in my blogging lately.  A whole two months and change without any updates; a combination of relying on my phone for emails/facebook and not switching on the laptop for longer periods of time are to blame.  Additionally I’ve been feeling a bit stuck in a rut with not much news to report.  I really should try and post something every day, or at least every week.

Things have had their ups and downs over the last few months.  I’m still without a job.  The horse has been signed off from the Vet so we are back riding him and he’s coming on nicely.  The steps-per-day are gradually increasing, I’m averaging between 5-7k most days with at least one 10k day a week.  I’m planning, when I have an income again, to buy a cross trainer so that I can increase my step count whilst getting some cardio work.  I would go running but the concussion causes me horrid pain in my hip and lower back so the cross trainer would allow greater speeds without the jarring.

On the job front I’m holding off on the self-employed angle because I’m claiming Jobseekers Allowance to cover bills whilst I’m looking for a job and if you go self-employed you are not entitled to claim but still have no guarantee of work.  I’m hoping to find a part-time job which will give me a core income but still leave me time to cultivate clients.  However, unless you have children it is difficult to convince an employer that someone of 32 who was previously a Senior Executive PA in London simply wants a part time job to have a better quality of life.  I think they assume that you are only going for a part-time job for an ‘any port in a storm’ application.  I’m finding it very frustrating.  I have a few applications on the go and am trawling the job sites and local paper for more opportunities but it is a soul destroying process.

However, I keep muttering to myself to the phrase “there is something better around the corner” and keep sending off the applications because what else can you do but keep on keeping on.

Getting to the root of the problem

I’ve been a bit distracted of late.  Hence the lack of posts.

Before I get into the why I’ve been distracted, a quick update on resolutions…

  • Steps – I’ve been averaging about 4k a day and have had one 10k+ day so far.
  • Pilates – I’ve been doing the classes but not the DVDs as yet
  • Dog walking – hmmm.  Mostly round the field at least once a day but not “out” for a walk yet
  • healthy eating… hit and miss would be the best comment on this one!

So, on to what has been keeping me distracted…. Archie has been under the weather with a poorly tooth, which he had extracted in November and hasn’t really healed properly.

Without waffling on too much, we had big debates about whether any further treatment would be in his best interests (taking into account the extent of the infection he had, which looked like it had gone into the bone of his jaw) or whether go ahead with a rather major operation.  Lots of tears & heartache but we decided to go ahead with the op.

We dropped him off at the vets yesterday ready to go in for his op this afternoon.  I heard when I got back from work today that he had come round ok, that the vet had to take out a lot* (my very technical term) of infected bone but it feels like he got it all.

So, the major worry of whether they would go in and find something they couldn’t fix is over but there is now the critical 48 hours post-op window to navigate.  Still not out of the woods but at least if it doesn’t heal up now and we have to have him put down, we know that we’ve done everything possible (within reason for the welfare of the horse) to get him over it.

That’s what has been keeping me distracted, using up nearly all my brain power, when I’m not actively distracting myself from thinking, and being a big drain on my emotions.

Fingers crossed.  Hope for the best & prepare myself for the worst.  Those are my two mottos at the moment.

 

In other news, it has been confirmed that my fixed-term contract won’t be extended past the end of March so I’m back on the job hunt again.  Oh joy.  However, I do have an interview next Tuesday for a job 12 miles down the road, which will be cheaper in petrol!

Feeling the benefit

Monday = Pilates day.

Some days during the week I wake up crippled with back-pain and it takes me at least the whole morning to get over it.  That is, until I’ve got back into doing Pilates – it works wonders for my back.  A few quick stretches and a “position check” eases out the kinks and I feel 100% better and about 2 inches taller.  I’ve just invested in a foam roaller (to join my thera-band at home) so I can build on the work I can do at home in addition to my classes on a Monday.

I’ve always enjoyed Pilates (my chiropractor forbade me from doing Yoga years ago as my joints are on the verge of being “too flexible”) as it builds on core stability which strengthens my back which has been problematic since a rather nasty fall from my horse in 1994.  However, since getting a diagnosis of CFS and putting that together with the fact that most of my bouts of illness were preceded by my trying to add in some aerobic exercise, I have decided to concentrate on Pilates (and hopefully in the autumn some Tai-Chi) so I can increase my fitness by increasing my muscle density and leave the aerobic exercises for some point further in the future – apart from some gentle rides on my bike.

I’ve also sent my CV to a company who provide remote PA assistance to see if they want to take on any additional support.  Fingers crossed, it might be just what I need.

30th June 2010 – Update

A quick update – everything with work is finished, the paperwork has been sorted. Now I just need to wait for my last payment and I’m done.

It is such a relief, I feel I can finally see my way forward. I had clung so long to being able to go back to that job as being the pinacle of my “recovery” but I’ve since realised that the job was part of what made me crash so far… I was expending all my energy in the job and leaving none for myself.

I’ve decided that, as long as I can afford to, I want to go back to a 0.75 job and use the other .25 of “full time” hours to devote to keeping up my physical stamina, that is just as important as having a job and it leaves the rest of the “downtime” for having fun and chilling out with friends.

Alternatively I might find myself a full time job which has an element of activity in it – I’m thinking of going back towards Private PA work, possibly something where there is an element of childcare involved, but something where it’s not confined to a desk all the time.

I’m now going off to check out the bus route into Salisbury to see how much and how long and whether that would be an option for getting into work when I get back to doing some or whether the Park & Ride might be a better idea.
